Defensive Tips:
-
Must always be staggered. The
Middle defenseman must always be two steps behind the board
defenseman.
-
You must clear out the man
in front of the net
-
Players score goals, Stick check anyone in front of the
net or high slot, play the opposing player.
-
Play the player, don’t try to play goalie and stop
shots. This will only result in a deflection and a goal against us.
-
On a 2 on 1 break away. The Defenseman splits the to
opposing players and does not play the skater with the puck. The
player with the puck is the goalie’s responsibility. The defenseman
job is to intercept the pass or back check the other player so he
cannot get a rebound.
-
On a 1 on 1 break away try to intercept the play at the
blue line. Skate backwards and close the gap, then play the body and
take the skater off the puck. Don’t swipe at the puck, don’t even
play the puck, play the body.
Playing
Shorthanded (1 man down)
(5 on 4)
Box – Object
is to keep the puck on the perimeter, allow the other team to pass the
puck around the perimeter but not allow a shot. Make sure we don’t
screen our goalie.
-
2 Wingers play high side by side and keep pushing the
play outside.
-
2 Defenseman play low side by side and keep pushing
the play outside. 1 defenseman must always be stick checking the
opposing player in front of the net and not allowing him to screen
our goalie. Move him out of the way.
Diamond –
Object is to keep the puck on the perimeter, allow the other team to
pass the puck around the perimeter but not allow a shot. Make sure we
don’t screen our goalie. Good if we are shorthanded and may still
need to score a goal.
-
One Defenseman plays in front of the net and clears
out opposing player
-
Two Wingers play side by and keep pushing the play
outside
-
One FAST Winger plays high and chases the puck around
trying to create a turnover.
